A Really Interesting Interview

Coral, an English philologist who teaches at our school, agreed to answer some questions about the European Parliament elections and the role which the EU has for our country and its performance in the world.
Really stimulating reflections that made us think and that let us know a little bit better the different opinions on the matter.

INTERVIEW

Sport is life

Sport is one of our favourite hobbies. We spend most of our freetime playing football, basketball, tennis, paddle or swimming, so we wanted to dedicate an activity in homage to this healthy task.
We organised a football league with children from 11 years old to 18. The referee had to wear an European flag to promote the elections!!
Those weeks were fantastic!!

Interview time!

During the Cultural Week, we interviewed Inés, one of the best students in our High School, and asked her about the UE. Interesting opinion of an interesting girl.

Our blog in Twitter!!

Yes, you are not dreaming! We are in Twitter, follow us! It is @SpainEuroscola
We want to make good friends like you!!

Young people, new opinions

After having talked to lots of partners, we conclude that each person has his/her own opinion about the UE and its role in Spain, but it is also true that they all agree about the fact that the assessment is positive. We live better since we entered the Union in 1986.
We asked younger students about the subject and they expressed their interest of collaborating with us. They helped us asking questions and, over all, telling people about the elections!! Don't forget to vote on 25th May!!!
Thanks a lot, Lucía, Pedro, Jodie, Jesús, Javi, Sergio, Félix and the rest!!

Encouraging young people

It is widely stated that young people are not interested in politics. Since we are taking part in this group, we want to show that this saying is not true.
16-year-old Carmen, 17-year-old Lucía, 16-year-old Maribel, 18-year-old Pedro... We let all these students (and more) know about the European Parliament elections. It wasn't hard work, because they had an idea about their role and their importance. Thank u all!!

Technological activity

Last week it was the Cultural Week at our school, so our team wanted to cooperate. Then, we suggested a lot of original ideas. However, we had to be realistic and we realised that building a telescope or making a computer were activities too complicated for our skills. Nevertheless, we made lots of activities with our teacher's help!

One of them was building a motor. It was so easy that we couln't believe it! You can make it with only a nail, a battery, some cable and a neodymium magnet. As we had studied, the electricity produced a magnetic field, so that the magnet spins around!!

Dissemination

We think it is very important for all European Union citizens to be aware of the importance of the European elections, so we are sharing in our own Facebook accounts all the entries of this blog, so that our contacts know about our project and the related activities and we can reach as much people as possible.

We have also asked the teachers who administrate our school Comenius projects Facebooks to do the same, so that our European friends and colleagues are also well informed of what we are doing.
We have the Facebook account "SpanishTeam Teachers" to be in contact with our friends from the Sporture project in Poland, Croatia, Austria, Holland, Slovenia and Turkey, where all the relevant entries of this blog have been published.

SPORTURE

There is also an active account from our former project "Cultheroes Comenius Spain", where we are still in touch with our associates in Belgium, Lithuania, Turkey, Germany and Ireland. They have been updated too!

CULTHEROES

Dear European friends

Thanks to projects as Comenius or Euroscola, we've had the chance to know other cultures, languages, traditions, meals or lifestyles. Nevertheless, we got fascinated by people. Irish, Belgian, Lithuanian, German (sorry for maybe forgetting any other nationality) and even other Spanish people have taught us another point of view, another way of living. We've laughed in other languages, we've sung strange songs that didn't have any meaning for us, we've danced to complicated dances that we hadn't even seen before... But, over all, we've enjoyed to the f***ing top!! (Sorry for the expression!)

Thank U, Chiara, Iliriana, Nina, Adam, Katie, Molly, Eoin, Paula, Raminta, Brigita, Declan, Kate, Stefen, Elke, Robin, Charie, Ailbhe, Colm, Gwendina, Femke, Daniel, Lisa, Kamile, Grace, Nihal, Cemile, Tugba, Ceyda, Donal, Elena, Annelies, Zeynep, Lukas..., and the others.

First activity

After our brainstorm, we concluded that the first thing we should do was a debate in class, so we could share our points of view of the role of the European Union in the modern world...

And that's what we've done! We asked our teacher to spend a while talking about these issues with our classmates.
We prepared some questions for them and improvised some more. The initiative was great fun! This has been the result. We hope you enjoy!

The date: 25th May 2014

This time is different is the slogan on the ads for the European elections that will be held all over the EU between 22nd and 25th May 2014 (depending on the country). In Spain we will be one of the last to vote: we will do it on Sunday 25th.
Here is the ad (they should have included the election date for each country though!)

A Long Way

The European Union is now one of the most important organizations but it has not always been that way. Politicians and citizens of all Europe have worked really hard to build what it is now. They had to cope with difficult situations, which made them stronger.

The youth needs to know about the past to appreciate the present, and keep fighting for a fairer society, as our ancestors did. Let's watch this short video that we have made to get closer to our history!

EU for dummies, tontos & bêtes!

Don't you know how important the European Union is yet? Don't worry!! This video from youtube will explain the key points of its task.

But if you are Spanish-speaker, here's your video! En el siguiente vídeo, te mostramos algunos de los valores que promueve a Unión Europea. (Admitimos que el vídeo puede parecer un poco estúpido xD)

And finally, if you are neither an English-speaker nor a Spanish-speaker, and your native language if French, just watch this video! Voilà un petit reportage. On y vous montre un des projects que l' Union Européenne (avec UNICEF) réalise pour améliorer les conditions de vies de millions de personnes.

Our aim

One of our main objectives is to highlight the importance of the European Parliament elections in many aspects, so we'll focus our initiatives in emphasizing their repercussion.

For instance, surely, you'd like to change a lot of things. Maybe, you are against some law or you don't like a particular facet of your government. Perhaps you really want the ruling party to go away and one of the others to replace it. You can do your bit to help and change the things you don't agree, but do you think everyone can do it?

We have vehemently thought about that and we have finally concluded that the answer is negative. What about nature, animals and plants? What would they say about the way that they are treated by us? It can seem a stupid point. However, if we consider the harm we cause them, the question starts to make sense.
Fortunately, everything's not lost. We still can improve the world. We must do it for them.

Brainstorm!

Before carrying out our idea we have been brainstorming. Here is a video!

A European School

We are studying our last year of Secondary Education at IES Sierra Luna, a school in the south of Spain, so obviously we are in a European school, but the title of this entry implies much more than a geographical placement.
When we say that we are in a European school its true meaning is that our school participates in several European projects (Comenius, Erasmus+) to give us students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of experiencing how life is in a foreign country, meeting foreign people our same age, with our same interests, using English as a vehicle for communication.
Last year we finished a Comenius programme with schools from Ireland, Turkey, Belgium, Germany and Lithuania, and this year we have exchanges with schools from Belgium, Sweden, Italy, Croatia, Poland, Holland, Turkey, Slovenia and Austria.
Fran, a member of the Euroscola project, was able to travel to Belgium, where he had time to learn how to cook Belgian-style fries, go to the Museum of Chocolate, and of course visit Brussels, a magnificent city full of history with astonishing monuments and landmarks.
Laura and María Jesús took part in the Comenius project, this time travelling to Ireland. There they learnt traditional Irish games, visited Dublin, the capital city, and met wonderful people that they can call friends now. They had the opportunity to experience life in a foreign country, learning to appreciate different cultures, traditions, values and ways of living. It was an unforgettable experience!
